Is anyone really best off staying with iPhone deals?

I’ve been scouting around for some sound cheapiPhone 4S deals, and I’ve seen a lot these days all around SIM only deals, claiming that they’re rather a lot cheaper than a standard contract.
Could there be a catch on SIM only deals, coz I can’t see for what reason they would be much more economical without one?
If someone could share any additional information of the best SIM only iphone 4s contracts, that might be very handy.
